You SHOULD know this, because it is INCREDIBLY important and something that wasn’t acknowledged until very, VERY recently.

(I did a history project on this in Y9. We got to do something from the 20th century; everyone else did, like, Marilyn Monroe, and I read a translation of Moi, Pierre Seel, déporté homosexuel and then did my project on that. Cheerful, no, but important to know about, yes.)

Homosexual concentration camp prisoners were not acknowledged as victims of Nazi persecution.^[7] Reparations and state pensions available to other groups were refused to gay men, who were still classified as criminals — the Nazi anti-gay law was not repealed until 1994, although both East and West Germany liberalized their criminallaws against adult homosexuality in the late 1960s.

“Gay Holocaust” survivors could be re-imprisoned for “repeat offences”, and were kept on the modern lists of “sex offenders”. Under the Allied Military Government of Germany, some homosexuals were forced to serve out their terms of imprisonment, regardless of the time spent in concentration camps. (X)

Also worth mentioning that homosexuals are still largely unacknowledged as victims of the Holocaust even within circles where they should know better. For example, in the Holocaust Museum in DC and Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, gay deaths are acknowledged only in passing and there is not a single picture of a “man of the pink triangle” - only of an empty ballroom that had once held a gay dance club. When Yad Vashem was completely redone in 2005, gay groups pressed for inclusion alongside other non-Jewish groups such as the disabled, Roma, etc., and numerous senior-level officials and the Rabbinate condemned such requests for inclusion, with some going so far as to suggest that the homosexuals were German criminals and therefore did not belong in the same category as the Jews who had done nothing wrong. When the memorial to gays in the Holocaust was unveiled in Berlin four years ago, senior members of Yad Vashem condemned it and, in particular, its proximity to the memorial for Jewish victims of the Shoah.

Re-blogging again because when I was being taught the history of Nazi Germany, THIS WAS NEVER EVER EVER MENTIONED. NOT ONCE.

This is sickening. It isn’t mentioned in our textbooks either.

Okay, I need to put in my two cents here on that comment concerning Yad VaShem.

While yes, ALL deaths caused by the Nazis were murders and should be remembered for the atrocities they were, Yad Vashem is very specifically a JEWISH memorial, not a Roma, Christian, etc. It is for the Six Million Jewish dead, which includes homosexuals.

There are thousands of Holocaust museums, and many that I have been to mention the other five million (Roma, the mentally impaired, Catholics, Communists, homosexuals, etc.) killed under Hitler’s regime. In Israel, at the Children’s Museum, (where the famous Butterfly Room is,) there is a room mentioning all the people the Nazis killed, not just Jews and/or straight people.

Saying that Yad VaShem, a Holocaust memorial specifically meant for the Jews killed, MUST have more about the others killed (and no, I’m not saying no Jew was a homosexual,), is akin to saying a memorial on the Irish in America should talk about the Italians. There are plenty of museums for just that.

Also, when I went to Yad VaShem and saw the room with the ballroom photo, I was actually surprised, and proud, that they had put it up. So much stigma had been applied to mentioning the homosexual dead before, (especially in Europe,) that Yad VaShem was one of the LEADING museums to show this. LONG before the major American ones did, in fact.

So please, before you condemn Yad VaShem, realize what the curators are trying to do: get RID of the stigma attached to homosexuals, that German history caused after the war.

Oh, I see. My knowledge about museums and/or memorials is woefully inadequate - thank you for clarifying about that, that’s good to know.

“The vast majority of books, movies, television news reports, legislation, etc. that aim to tackle the problem of youth on youth violence and harassment (euphemistically termed “bullying”) do little to solve the problem and sometimes even do a fair amount to make it worse. This is primarily because these “solutions” fail to take into account the structural forces which conspire to put youth into oppressive situations which they cannot choose to walk away from. Almost all adults have found themselves in a situation where they experienced alienation and unhappiness with the people around them whether it be at a university, a job, a place of worship, a community organization, or even an entire town. The reason that this sort of thing rarely drives adults to take their own lives or to resort to violence against others is not primarily because adults are more mature than youth are - it is that adults are more or less free to leave these situations and move on to one they are happier about. So “anti-bullying” programs which do not seek to ameliorate the lot of students by giving them greater control over their educational environment do little to actually address the problem.”
